What do we study?
In the Social Perceptions of Science Lab, we study best practices for communicating and teaching about culturally controversial science topics in a way that reduces conflict in society about science. Science is fundamental for advancing human health, ensuring national security, and understanding our human nature but societal divides and lack of effective communication hinder our scientific progress. To address these divides within society, we create and test conflict-reducing practices that prepare undergraduate science students to understand science and society issues and communicate about science in ways that promote empathy and collaboration across ideological divides.
Since our research team needs robust surveys to do our research, we also study how to build and improve survey methodology. We evaluate current surveys using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to help researchers elevate the quality of their surveys and ultimately improve research on teaching and learning of culturally controversial science topics.

The Social Perceptions of Science Lab is located at Middle Tennessee State University, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee
